Simple Vegan Sloppy Joes

“I know how you like sloppy joes extra sloppy” – Lunch Lady, Billy Madison

There’s nothing more delicious than a heaping helping of sloppy joes. But, with that comes a dash of guilt and a potential gut punch. I mean, you cannot just simply eat one. As we see a massive uprising in the meat-free and meat-alternative transition across the world, it only makes sense that we find healthy alternatives to classic mega-meals that filled our childhood backyard bashes and lunchrooms.

For the simple vegan sloppy joe recipe, we turn to an easy 30-minute meal that can feed the whole family and have you wanting more. The beauty about these vegan sloppy joes is that the recipe scales easily and the macro-nutrients become evermore favorable to your daily caloric intake the more you add vegetables.

In this sloppy joe mix, we use three peppers and one onion, but as I was perfecting this beast of a batch, I used carrots, celery, and even tossed in some lentils at one point (not a good idea, if I say so myself). If you stick with the recipe as it exists, you will take in a max of 280 calories, 15 grams of fat, 19 grams of carbohydrates, and whopping 19 grams of protein for you muscle-bound bodybuilders fearing that if you leave the meat you’ll lose your heat in the gym.

However, the catch is what you spread it on. I like to use organic flaky biscuits to accompany my delicious vegan sloppy joe mix, but you can always try rice, beans, sprouted grain bread, etc. The recipes for this tasty sloppy joe recipe are endless.

Now, turn on your favorite episode of The Office, start prepping, and enjoy these simple vegan sloppy joes.

  • 1 Package of Beyond Meat Ground Beef
  • 1 Yellow Onion
  • 1 tsp. Organic Worcestershire Sauce (Annie's Natural Used)
  • 15 oz. Tomato Sauce
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 Yellow Bell Pepper
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp. Cumin
  • 2 Tbsp. Chili Powder
  • Dash of Paprika (Smoked)
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Step One: Start by prepping your peppers and onions using a sharp chef’s knife and cutting board. The goal is to dice them into small bits so they cook down quickly. Once complete, transfer to a pan over medium heat and add water (in place of oil) and saute until softened and translucent.

Step Two: Add the package of Beyond Meat Ground Beef chopping and mixing with peppers and onions. It might take a few minutes to chop down into a ground mix. You will find that chopping is necessary throughout the entire process.

Step Three: Add the can of tomato sauce making sure to evenly spread through the mixture of Beyond Meant Ground Beef and pepper/onion mix. Once mix, begin adding dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Step Four: Reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, mixing periodically to ensure the bottom does not overcook.
